Editorial: Gun Control Might be the Solution to School Shootings
February 28, 2018
“We lose eight children and teenagers to gun violence every day. If a mysterious virus suddenly started killing eight of our children every day, America would mobilize teams of doctors and public health officials. We would move heaven and earth until we found a way to protect our children. But not with gun violence,” said Elizabeth Warren. Gun Control has become a problem in the US and nobody is doing anything about it. Sure, President Trump gives speeches about “mental health,” causing school shootings, but what is he actually doing to solve the problem?
School shootings have been going crazy lately, 54% of school shootings are because the individual is/was getting bullied at school, 36% is because of mental illnesses, and 10% is because of depression. This is all schoking to everyone because the year of 2018 has just started and there has already been 18 school shootings. This is disgusting and unhuman like to put all these children in fear of going to school.
There should be stricter gun policies in the U.S., because we are only nine weeks into 2018 and there have already been over 10 shootings. Gun violence has increased over the weeks, and it’s just going to get worse. It would be nice to go out places and not have to be so alert all the time. School should also be a safe place, but as shown in Florida, school isn’t really secure either.
CNN news reports what trump has been saying about the recent school shooting in Florida that was started by Nikolas Cruz. Our president, Donald Trump’s Twitter account said, “Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign – there is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!” — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 18, 2018 Donald Trump is more worried about the FBI and Russian investigation. Many people are surprised that no one noticed how Nikolas Cruz was hurting inside or that he was planning on a shooting. People should’ve realized what he was going through.
Ways to fix this problem could include mental health checks on people buying guns, raise the age restriction on the gun buying age, make people more alert on the signs of what could happen to cause a school shooting, and even security in schools. After 9/11, they put security in airports, so why not put security in schools? With these suggestions we could decrease the amount of school shooting percentages by a lot. This could save countless numbers of lives and overall solve, or at least decrease, the number of school shootings in the U.S alone.
If we would have done something right after the first shooting, others would have been prevented. Guns can’t be taken away completely but, there could be limits. If you are underage and can’t buy a drink you shouldn’t be able to get a gun. Our government needs to take action and fix this problem. If we don’t fix this problem, just think about what would happen to our society.
