For most students, the season of finals and end-of-course exams can be a stressful and nerve-racking time. Students get nervous because they do not want to fail or get a bad grade. They go through rigorous review days, trying to pack as much information into their brains as they can. Some get anxiety.

Two of the most dreaded tests is the math final and EOC. If algebra students don’t pass this test, they don’t get the credit they need for that class. If you don’t get your credit that means that you have to take the entire course over again freshman year.

Reese Evans, 8th graders, is an algebra student who struggles. “Algebra is not my cup of tea,” he said.

Reese Christensen, 8th grade, algebra student said it’s paying attention to the details that is a challenge for her.  “I think algebra is so difficult because this year solving problems just requires more steps than usual, and when you miss a step it’s so frustrating,” she said.

Although it seems like students are the only ones worrying about the finals, they’re not. Teachers are just as stressed as their stressed students. Students may think that their teacher isn’t worried because all they have to do is teach them the information, but if a lot of students fail a certain final it reflects badly on the teacher. 

Gabriella Stucker, a 7th grade student, thinks the math test  would take her two hours to complete. “There’s too many questions for me, but I’ll do my best to score a ninety or higher.” But one thing that is for sure is that Stucker plans to go to bed early, and eat a healthy breakfast. “I just hope I pass!” she said.

These tests may be stressful, but experts say students should focus on mindfulness and relaxation and doing things like taking a deep breath to relax. Experts say that preparation is also key. The night before the test make sure you get a good night’s sleep, and when you wake up eat a good breakfast. Preparation should begin long before the test. Studying is important and paying attention in class can also help students get good results.
