Social media plays a big role in my life, and I’m sure that my peers feel this way too. When I wake up, the first thing I grab is my phone. I check my social media apps and see what if I missed anything over the night. I grab my phone when I’m supposed to be doing homework, I grab it when i’m going to bed, or eating a snack, or even when i should be spending time with my family. I spend way too much time on my phone. When I watched this video about how 10 girls deleted their social media apps, I thought to myself, “I would never be able to do that!” I quickly realized that although this challenge would be hard, I should try to do it.
The girls said that they felt “relieved and stress free” after this challenge. One of the girls said that she was able to go to sleep quicker. When I’m supposed to be asleep, I go on social media and stay awake a lot longer than I should be. Another one of the girls said that she finished her homework faster and was a lot more productive. When I do my homework, I will do a few problems then go on my phone. By the time I’m done with homework, it’s almost 7:00 pm and I should be getting ready to go to sleep and start winding down. My parents are constantly telling me to get off my phone and to “enjoy the moment.” I feel bad sometimes because I know that I should be spending time with them and enjoying the time I have with them, but my phone is too addicting. Scientists say that about 50% of teenagers are addicted to their phone. The fact that HALF of our teens are addicted to a phone is a major problem that we, as a community, need to fix. I feel like if I were to do this challenge, I would be much more relaxed and calm. I’d probably be able to do a lot of stuff and be much more productive. I want to try this challenge and see what it’s like to not be so worried and stressed all the time.
