Many Dobie students aren’t fans of the dress code
October 23, 2019
The dress code policy of Dobie Middle School is a policy that requires all students to dress in proper attire according to the guidelines. The student dress code can be found in the SCUCISD 2019-2020 Code of Conduct, linked on the Dobie Jr. High School website. According to the dress code, some examples of what can’t be worn are:
- Bare midriff top, halter tops, off-the-shoulder tops, spaghetti strap tops that show cleavage, short shorts or low-cut pants that are revealing.
- No showing undergarments
- No swimwear, tube tops, muscle shirts,
- Pajamas or slippers are also not allowed.
Many students of Dobie think the dress code is not very fair. Harley Jones, an 8th grade student, seems to have mixed feelings about the dress code. Although Jones believes in some guidelines being necessary, she expressed her thoughts on what changes need to be made. “It’s kinda fair [but] they choose random things like the holes [in jeans], being a little [high] or super high,” she said. “They should let the girls have more options on what they wear, like crop tops.”
When asked how she would rate the code on a scale of 1 -10, Jones said, ”I give the dress code a five because some stuff is understandable and some stuff is kinda too much.”
The school’s policy states, the purpose of the dress code is to provide guidance to students and parents for appropriate school attire. Enforcement of the dress code is also a primary means for helping students to learn proper attire required for success in getting and keeping employment. “People should be able to wear what they feel comfortable in! Some things are understandable and some are unfair,”said jones She also expressed that there may be more rules for girls than for boys. “I feel like the boys don’t get in that much trouble like the girls.” “Boys mostly do get in trouble for [sagging] their pants or muscle shirts or the boys that wear [too short] shorts.”
Aubrey Thompson, 8th grader, had similar feelings like Harley jones about the dress code. “I know that they have a strict dress code for the girls for reasons, but I think it’s still a bit ridiculous,” said Thompson. “I think Dobie should change the girls dress code, because girls like to wear certain clothes to express their personality and they can’t with this dress code. Thompson said her rating on the dress code, “a five, because in a way they are trying to have the boys stay to the code and the girls have a variety of clothes.”
Although Thompson feels that a dress code is a “Good Idea”, she did express other concerns. “I think the dress code is a good idea, because they have a dress code for the girls not to wear stuff up in there butt and not for shirts to be too short.”
“I think the dress code is different for the boys because the boys have a less strict dress code then the girls and they also have less variety of clothing.” Thompson said, “ in a way, i think the dress code discriminates against girls Because they are making it seem like the girls fault that the boys cant stay focused.”
Maybe the question is not if people need the dress code, but maybe we should be asking ourselves a different question… should we be regulating boys and girls proper attire by gender, or by expression of personality, or by a conservative society? I found that most people don’t have a problem with rules, they just want them to apply to everyone and not just to one gender.
According to the website FindLaw, clothing is an expression of ideas. Schools take some of those privileges away for specific reasons like requiring girls and boys to cover up, while also keeping in mind the importance of self comfort. Today in most states the laws allows individual school boards to make dress code rules for students within their district. Promoting a safe and disciplined school environment in efforts of preventing interference with schoolwork and discipline. These policies are to encourage uniformity of students yet allowing students to feel comfortable while also having some freedom of expression, as long as it meets dress code.

I agree because I like wearing ripped jeans. I also think it is more unfair to the girls

Some of the things in the SCUC dress code are a bit outrageous. Others are needed in the schools. I completely understand why crop tops aren’t allowed. The school should make it to where it only doesn’t show stomach, chest, or back. Showing shoulders should be okay because it doesn’t reveal any unnecessary skin unlike crop tops, which show the stomach. I believe most of the pant dress code it fine the way it is though.

this is true though….. I feel like there are too many rules for us girls, I shouldn’t have to wear certain clothes because I’m “being distracting” showing “too much”. and its not like a boy is gonna just look at your shoulders then go up to his friends and say, “dude did you see her shoulders though!?”

this is so true. if i want to wear some nice, comfy shorts to school i can’t because i’ll get dress coded i just want to be comfortable.

I agree because boys wear muscle shirts with nasty armpit hair and nobody wants to see that and; meanwhile, I cant have my bra strap showing without getting dress coded. Just because I have rips in my jeans on my thigh, its not going to distract others. I shouldn’t have to miss class and change so boys can learn without distractions.

I can relate to this so much! Finally someone who understands.

I agree the dress codes annoying. Its way too strict. I want to be able to wear jeans with holes in them.

I really like this article because I can agree with some of the things these girls say. For example, when they say there are more rules for girls then boys and they should be a little less strict. I also like that you interviewed a good variety of people instead of just one person and going off of only that person only.

I agree that many school dress codes can be annoying or to much. I just want to come to school comfortable. I don’t think it’s fair that I can’t wear what i want, because I’m “distracting” someone.

I like this story because i feel the same way about there rules. Its always been hard to find good clothes for school like pants and shirts. Sometimes i think that the dress code is a little dumb for some kids but they still have to follow it.

I agree that some of the dress code is to much. How is someones stomach showing a distraction or shoulders. Also why do the rips in pants have a certain spot to go up to that is annoying.
Aubrey gattis • Oct 30, 2019 at 10:20 am
I agree because at my school we don’t like the dress code because students should be comfortable wearing what we want to wear.

I feel like dress codes target girls and restricts their ability to express their self in their clothing choices. Something I understand, but some I do not understand. If boys get distracted, teach them not to get distracted by girls, most boys do not.

I agree that the dress code is a little much because girls should be allowed to express themselves, and i think that the dress code targets girls, because the dress code is much more strict for girls and less so for boys.

i think the dress code should stand to protect the girls.

This new dress code at Dobie can easily be seen as unfair, because students should still be allowed to feel comfortable in their clothes but while also dressing appropriately. There are still several ways to feel comfortable while also looking cute. You can have holes in your jeans above the knees, but maybe sew cloth into the hole inside of the jeans.
