Personal View: Veterans should be treated with more respect
December 12, 2019
Veterans are people who have served our country and dedicated their lives for our country. The sacrifices that they have made are recognized annually by celebrating the veterans in our country on Veterans Day. It’s important to recognize them for their hard work, even though many of them ended up living on the street
According to the U.S Department of Veteran Affairs, there were over 37,000 veterans experiencing homelessness in January 2018, and over 23,000 of them were unsheltered. This may sound like a lot, but the number of homeless veterans has decreased by over 50 percent since 2010.
This isn’t something that our country should be proud of. Veterans are people who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country are living on the streets. It’s as if their hard work didn’t mean anything. Although the amount of homeless veterans has gone down, 37,000 homeless veterans is still such a high number.
Although I’ve never experienced having to deal with the struggles of a military family, I have had a few members in my family that were a part of the military, and just thinking of them being homeless breaks my heart. I believe that all veterans should be treated way better than they are currently being treated. The people who have served our country should be treated better after the things that they have done.
