The importance of counselors

Madyson Rivera and Brayden Rooks

Counselors provide support and advice to students. They help with all kinds of situations, from comforting someone in negative situations to providing help to someone in achieving their goals. Counselors have busy schedules, they do all sorts of things at a day of work. They are never sitting down doing nothing, they are always working on something or meeting with someone.

National School Counseling Week 2020, “School Counselors: Helping Build Better Humans,” was celebrated from Feb. 3–7, 2020, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

Counselors are based on your last name. There are three counselors at Dobie; Ms. Navarro (A-GO), Ms. Schroeder (GR-O), and Ms. Ruhd (P-Z). They are always open to talking to you when you need to, and can be found upstairs in the counselor’s offices.

If you need to talk to one of the counselors, turn in a slip to their office, and give a basic explanation about the situation that you need to talk about. Counselors will pull you out of one of your elective classes to meet with them. If it’s an emergency they may pull you out of one of your core classes to discuss the situation as soon as possible.

Damian Midkiff, an 8th grader at Dobie Junior High, believes that they are open and accepting of all students. “They are very good at supporting the child rather than submitting to the parents’ beliefs,” he said. “Although I haven’t had any personal experiences with counselors, I know other people that have had experiences with them, and they have been of great help to those students.”

According to the American School Counselor Association, counselors provide services to students to help them with school-related issues and anything involving their mental health during school. They provide advice to students about planning their future relating to schooling and their career. They can even recognize warning signs in students in need of help or assistance.

Tatiana Nabozny, an 8th grader at Dobie, believes that counselors are important to help students with their problems. “They can talk through a student’s problems and give advice for their everyday lives,” she said. “The reason why I believe counselors are important is that  they help out students whenever they can no matter the situation.”
