Dobie’s National Junior Honor Society is one of the most well known and active clubs on campus, but COVID-19 has changed their club. Dobie’s NJHS chapter is led by Dobie teachers Mrs. Reed and Mr. Patel. There are 68 students in NJHS this year (see the full list below).
To be inducted into NJHS their 8th grade year, Dobie students must have at least a 90 grade point average, submit an application, and be invited to join. Students who meet all requirements normally have an induction ceremony in the Spring. But the ceremony was canceled in May because like most other schools, Dobie was closed because of COVID-19 and students transitioned to online learning.
So far this Fall instead of meetings being held in person, meetings are held online, and they have to record a video of their election speeches. Normally, these activities are done in-person but during these times it’s just not possible.
2020-2021 Officers for Dobie’s NJHS are:
President – Madison Gastol
Vice-President – Airielle Bulgin
Secretary – Natalie Deleon
Treasurer/Public Relations – Kyle Banks
According to the NJHS website, “since 1929, the National Junior Honor Society has been recognizing the highest achieving students in grades 6-9. Modeled after its well-known companion program, the National Honor Society, NJHS provides a solid foundation for ambitious middle level students as they prepare for their high school and higher education pursuits.”
