animal euthanization needs to be stopped
February 22, 2017
The euthanization of animals in shelters or from people is cruel and inhumane because of the fact that most of the time it is done for no reason at all. Most of the time shelters around the world euthanize animals simply because they didn’t get adopted this goes for old ,baby, and mid aged animals. This also goes for the income of the shelters if the shelter can no longer take care of an animal they will “put it to sleep” as the vets say to young children if they are euthanizing their beloved pet.According to ASPCA pet statistics Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized. The animal’s body is thrown away as if they are trash and sit there to rot away until they are further disposed.
The way shelters get the animals is cruel as well. Animal shelters have things called dog catchers were someone is payed to go out and find stray dogs and cats out on the street. What does this mean exactly, well it means the animals are pulled out of there home in the wild to be thrown in a cage for money. This does not mean that all these animals are street dogs or cats they can also be lost family pets. Not all families looking for there pets look at shelters to find their pets in fact only 649,000 get back home out of 2.7 million get back home. This is not the only way shelters get there animals pet owners bring their pets they do not want or just can’t take care of to the shelter hoping that they will as they say “get a better home”.While all these family pets lost family companions and strays are thrown in cages are being looked at by people if they are not sold they will be euthanized or as you may know killed.
Animal shelters have many ways to euthanize animals but only a few of these are humane and the rest aren’t. According to Euthanasia Methods By State the method of euthanasia varies from state-to-state, two methods are most common. The first is euthanasia by injection (“EBI”), which most frequently uses sodium pentobarbital. The second, and more controversial, method is euthanasia by carbon monoxide or other lethal gas chambers.Other methods of euthanasia are permitted by statutes depending on the state, but are less common. The Humane Society of the United States concluded that the most humane euthanasia of animals is EBI with sodium pentobarbital, administered by a trained professional. The American Humane Association provides that EBI is the only humane method of euthanasia.I think it’s terrible that there is only one way of euthanization that is humane the inhumane ones put carbon dioxide in the animals lungs which means that it will slowly suffocate.
Once again the euthanization of animals is wrong. It needs to be stopped before it gets out of hand because many of these animals are loving and deserve a better life then living in a cage for there last moments alive.
