What do Dobie students do after school? Some do after school sports and other extracurricular activities or clubs. Some even go to tutoring provided by NJHS students or teachers. Dobie’s tutoring programs help students catch up on missing or late work. Tutoring gives students a chance to have a one-on-one conversation, with the teacher to make sure that they are caught up.
Mr. Patel, the technology apps teacher and an NJHS sponsor, said the tutoring program is one of the services that NJHS students provide. “It helps the students understand if they are struggling, or just need the help. The tutoring program is very flexible with the student’s schedule,” he said.
The NJHS tutoring program is available on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 7:45 to 8:02 and afternoons from 3:30 to 4:00 in room D-108. Food is not allowed during this time.
Cierrah Utsey said she believes that “it is very cool for you to come in at your own time to work.” For some students like Utsey, tutoring is very flexible and helpful. She said she asks for help with “homework questions” and gets help with corrections.
All teachers offer tutoring for their classes. Schedules for tutoring are on the Dobie Jr. High website.
Ms.Clarkson, 8th grade math and algebra teacher, said her tutoring days are Tuesdays and Thursdays before and after school. Ms.Clarkson offers tutoring, including test corrections, extra help, time to catch up on assignments because of absences, use of math calculators, and homework questions.
Imani Mullens believes that the tutoring program gives students a chance to catch up on missing work. “I went to Ms. Clarkson and it looked like everyone was on task. This shows that Dobie students are ready to work when coming into tutoring,” she said. “It looked like it was mostly the students that were failing or the students that were absent.”
